Situated in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains' Sawatch Range and Elk Mountains, the town of Aspen is steeped in history. Once a 19th century silver-mining town, its population was colossal with over 11,500 inhabitants, the town even retained its own opera house. However, its residents declined to under a 38th of its previous population in the 1930s, when the first ski-lift was opened. Nevertheless, the opening of that lift was vital to Aspen and now, fabulously posh, Aspen is Colorado’s glitziest resort, acting host to some of the wealthiest skiers in the world.
There are three other ski areas nearby, Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands. Famous for its black-diamond terrain, Aspen Mountain offers an assortment of trails, terrains and pistes. While the mountain hasn't changed much, it hasn’t needed to. With the new gondola, great views and food at the Sundeck at the summit and Ajax Tavern at the base, the place is a perfect setting for your perfect winter holiday.
However, don’t just visit Aspen in winter, hidden under Aspen Mountain and under the summer’s sun, your summer holiday can come alive in the handsome, historic red-brick town. Nothing compares to the scenery, the wonderful alpine environment is an appeal in itself, especially in autumn when the aspen trees put on a spectacular display. With a fertile, green surrounding, and many activities to participate in, such as mountain biking, hiking, climbing and many summer music festivals to attend, you are sure to find something for everyone to enjoy.
Come and visit the large beautiful lakes to fish, or maybe try your hand at golf. There are so many summer activities available in this wonderful town. And its glitz and glamour is not just reserved for its winter season. Whatever season you visit in, prepared to be wowed.
