Declared a French colony in the 18th century, the islands changed hands several times between the French and British before gaining independence in 1976. Throughout its history, the Seychelles have become home to people from all continents and are today famous for their blend of cultural backgrounds.

Fregate Island is a unique destination to experience the best the Seychelles have to offer. The name recalls legends and tales of treasure chests buried under the sands, as immortalized in Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island". And with over 10 km of roads and walking trails, you can comfortably explore the island - both with your own electric buggy and on foot.

The beaches frequently voted most beautiful beaches in the world, you have seven to choose from with total privacy.

Giant Aldabra Tortoises, bred from a population of 150 tortoises some 25 years ago to their current number of over 2.000, these ancient creatures are both symbols and witnesses of our unparalleled conservation effort. They have watched as their island home has been progressively restored to its natural state, allowing them to flourish and grow to their present numbers.

The sandy beaches of Fregate Island provide vital nesting habitat for two species of sea turtle: the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle and the endangered Green Turtle. Seychelles remains one of the few places on Earth where sea turtles come ashore to nest during the daytime. Every nesting season from October to January, our conservation staff's job it to safeguard and monitor the several hundred nests.

With plenty of opportunities to spot rare and exotic migrants, like the Fregate Bird, our exquisite birdlife will amaze nature lovers. Through ambitious conservation programmes the Seychelles Magpie Robin and others, such as the endemic Seychelles White Eye and Seychelles Warbler, have been brought back from the brink of extinction.

You can explore the winding mountain trails by hiking or explore the island on buggy trips. Alternatively you can also take one the mountain bikes. The air-conditioned gym facility by the Rock Spa is open for your workouts, including a personal trainer if required. Our resident instructor offers yoga lessons at any time of day. Our Stargazing programme lets you explore the night sky.

On Fregate Island, we want you to have dinner where ever you want. The island's individual spots all add their own touch to your dining occasion. Besides dining in our restaurants and bars, you can explore dining in our Treehouse high up in one of the island's oldest and largest banyan trees or in the Yacht Club. When you sit down to dine in our plantation, you choose your ingredients together with our Chef de Cuisine from a wide variety of exotic vegetables, herbs and fruits. You can also choose any of our beaches for a BBQ, breakfast, lunch or dinner. And for high tea, we recommend our Glacis Cerf Pavilion. On our Sunset Cruise or Sashimi Picnic we take you out on water in one of our boats. And on Mont Signal, the highest point on Fregate Island, we can also serve you an early evening cocktail.

What the press say

Uniqueness on Earth

The 16 villas here are conventionally luxurious inside, yet not private-island pristine outside, but that makes it all the more special: what could be more memorable than lying on grass next to one of the 2,200 Aldabra giant tortoises that roam free on the island.
