Fustic House is the only Plantation Estate directly overlooking the Caribbean coast of Barbados. With 11 acres, it is one of the largest private properties on the island. Fustic House has more open space than any of the major hotels and a high performance staff of 14 full time employees, including Stephen Bredemear, widely regarded as one of the best chefs in the Caribbean. Its location combines the benefits of being close to a quiet, sandy beach (3-5 minute walk through Half Moon Fort fishing village), without the disadvantages of being right on the beach - in terms of climate change, insurance, security, heat, bugs and pollution. The 820 foot (250 metre) west boundary of property is a mere 200 paces from the water.
There are stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and along the West coast. The estate has unparalleled mature, tropical gardens (designed by Todd Longstaffe-Gowan) and a tropical ravine, including the world famous, Oliver Messel-designed, lagoon swimming pool (which is supplied with ionized well water), a 1200 square feet (120 square metre) sun deck, a lotus lake and large stands of Mahogany and Pride of India trees. The gardens are a delight for horticulturalists, including many rare trees/species and an Orchid walk. Fauna include Barbados green monkeys (who stay away from both guests and accommodation), egrets, herons, humming birds and fireflies, with frequent Frigate birds surfing the light trade winds. The property has its own water supply from a well on the property, which feeds both the swimming pool and the extensive irrigation system – vital during the ‘dry’, winter season.
The external lighting is by acclaimed UK designer, Bruce Munro. There is an extensive Arawak cave system under the North lawn, with large chambers and naturally formed stalactites, which is currently being mapped by Prof. Hans Machel of the University of Alberta.
Although there have never been any security problems, like all major estates on Barbados, the grounds are patrolled 24 hours a day, and supplemented by state of the art surveillance at key locations. Fustic House is magical for children and is virtually paparazzi-proof (privacy from the press/outsiders).
